Budgets don't fail on math. They fail on Sundays — the week piles up, entering transactions feels like homework, so you skip it once, then twice, and by month-end the numbers are fiction and the app gets deleted.
The fix isn't discipline. It's shrinking the habit until skipping feels sillier than doing it. Three minutes, three steps:
Phone in one hand, bank app in the other. Description, category, amount. Done beats categorized — an entry marked "stuff, $40" is infinitely more useful than a perfect categorization system with no data in it. You can recategorize later; you can't re-remember.
Open your "over budget" view. Anything red? That's information, not failure. Either move money between envelopes (Fun → Bills happens to everyone) or consciously accept the overspend. The only real failure mode is not looking.
Unspent Fun money → your goal fund. Watching the travel number grow €20 at a time is the reward loop that keeps the whole system alive. No reward, no habit — that's neuroscience, not opinion.
You need exactly three: This month (everything, chronological), Over budget (categories where spent > limit), and Net worth (sum of accounts). If your tool can't show all three in under 10 seconds, the tool is the problem. The Notion Budget Pack ($19) ships with all three plus a worked sample month, and the Sheets port ($15) does the same with three formulas. Or start free with the VN Starter.
Next Sunday, set a timer. Three minutes. That's the whole post.
